When my reader vote for September 2017 sent me back to Poland’s Mazury Province, it was time for another sad bit of historic travel as I headed to the infamous and notorious Wilczy Szaniec (Wolf’s Lair near Kętrzyn – where Adolf Hitler spent over 800 days during World War II). These days Kętrzyn does attract some tourists and for this reason has a few hotels now. I opted for the 2 star Hotel Wanda.

This is a cosy and pleasant hotel and a perfect base for my trip to Kętrzyn. Here are the best reasons to book it.
1.Excellent Bar and Restaurant
Breakfast is included in the price of your room. The breakfast menu is good for a hotel in such a small town. The first morning I went for the eggs on toast. The second I had the sweet pancakes which came with apple, orange, blackberry, cream and cottage cheese. All breakfasts come with extra bread, butter and jam. You get a juice (I had orange juice both days) and either a tea or coffee. You won’t go hungry.
At night the restaurant also serves good meals and I had a beer here too.
2.WiFi In Every Room
As a travel writer, blogger, tourist, football freak and social media user, WiFi is important for me now. I love to type up my stories, whack a few posts on my NIMIP Instagram Page and the NIMIP Facebook Feed. Here I had fast WiFi in my room, even on the 2nd floor.
3.Warm and Clean Rooms
I was in room 204. The room was clean, cosy, warm and had a TV, a desk, a wardrobe, a very comfortable bed, a window view and nice shower room.
4.Chilled and Relaxed Vibe
The entire hotel has a very relaxed vibe. I came and went, nobody bothered me. You could read a book in the reception, have a quiet beer in the bar and simply just relax here. It’s one of the most relaxed hotels I’ve been in for a while!
5.Great Location for the Hitler’s Lair Tour
My main reason for backpacking to Kętrzyn was to visit Wilczy Szaniec/ Wolfscanze / Wolf’s Lair. Hotel Wanda, Kętrzyn is located less than 20 kilometres away and therefore is an easy access hotel for your trip to the forest. Kętrzyn itself is also a beautiful town to explore – I loved it!
