Smaczne Środy: Polish Sirloin Steak at Steakownia, Biskupiec

Last week on Smaczne Srody (my “Tasty Wednesdays” series), I went to a vegan restaurant in Warsaw to try a delicious vegan burger. This time, I did the complete opposite, I became a meat eater and went for a steak meal when my travels in Poland took me to the charming unknown town of Biskupiec in Warmia-Masuria Province. I was hungry in a world of white, snowy magic…beautiful Biskupiec.

Situated slap bang in the town centre of Biskupiec, on a prominent corner sits the Steakownia Steak House in the main square, Rynek, Plac Wolnosci. At one point in life, this building was a local pub. Now it’s a trendy, well priced, well recommended Steak House so I took my hunger through its doors while staying in the two main hotels in the town – a night in the Stara Kaflarnia Hotel and a night in the trendy Hotel Atelier.

I loved the way this steak house allows you to choose and pick the exact piece of meat you will eat.

There is no behind the scenes stuff here – even the kitchen where you food is cooked has windows to the main part of the restaurant. You can pick your meat, watch it being cooked and then devour it.

I met Pawel who was working here and I ordered and picked two slices of sirloin steak. He weighs them and then prices them – I was so surprised to learn that the price was under 10 zlotys, so under £2 for 2 sirloins. To accompany it then I chose a Tomato Juice (Sok Pomidorowy) and some purple cabbage, which was recommended by Pawel. The total bill was 20 zlotys, so about £4. Where I come from (and when I worked in a butchery years ago), you could just about buy 1 sirloin steak for that price, and even then you have to cook it yourself.

There is also a good choice of wine and beer, but I felt like tomato juice. A few couples were dining and drinking red wine.

I had ordered my steak to be cooked “medium well” and within 15 minutes, it had arrived.

As a cheap backpacker, I rarely eat good steak and this was definitely the best steak I have had for about a year, and definitely the best steak I have had in Poland. This place is well recommended and is also included in the best bars Biskupiec has to offer!
