When I first visited Gdańsk it was during Euro 2016! Northern Ireland had been knocked out by Wales in the last 16 and I headed through Belgium and Netherlands before flying into Gdańsk. I was meeting a travel friend here, Ola and reviewing a food tour, a city tour, a bike tour and a few hostels. At that time, I had no idea I would end up moving here to Gdańsk, although I have since moved to Olsztyn and Warszawa. I’ve even released a book on my journey to Gdańsk!
And so, I watched the quarter finals, semi finals and final of Euro 2016 in the bars of Gdańsk. With Poland also now out, the bars were not overly busy during the matches. I didn’t immediately find sports bars easy to come by, so I watched in a mixture of The Bar with no Name/Zimne Nóżki, Irish Pub Piwnica, a Karaoke Bar and a sports bar on Ulica Piwna (Beer Street) called Time Out. I watched the final, France 0-1 Portugal in there with Canadian backpacker Jessika.
Not long after, Time Out closed and reopened as an Asian restaurant. After that, I needed to find a new decent bar to watch the football in, every time I’m in Gdańsk, which is currently averaging about thrice to fivce a year. Then I found…GRASS! A sports bar, a football bar, a beer bar, a well decorated bar and a blend of Polish, Irish and British in a quirky green mix.
Grass Sports Bar opened in the same place where Tekstylia used to be. Tekstylia was a bar I’d write in often during my early days in Gdańsk!
Back then, it was just a restaurant. Now as GRASS, it is a fully fledged sports bar! And Tekstylia hadn’t closed, it had moved across the road!
In I popped with Klaudia back in 2019 and grabbed a Guinness and watched the football. During COVID lockdowns, I was based in Warszawa. Everytime I’d pop back up north to Gdańsk, I’d pop into Grass. It is a great bar, well run by a local guy, Piotr. He’s a football fan and big into retro football shirts. In here, the walls are adorned with football pictures, quotes and shirts.
The staff are great, they usually wear retro football t shirts. There are 4 screens inside showing the football, and in summer, football can also be shown outside in the beer garden, which is on the street.
There are good bars snacks, beers on tap, free WiFi. And of course, Guinness…
I also like the “guess the score” board. Durung big matches, you write your guess on the whiteboard. The winner gets a free pint. Always go for 2-0 to AFC Bournemouth!
Oh and the bar shows other sports too, and plays music, and gets a good atmosphere going. Don’t be surprised to see a travelling Northern Irishman swigging Guinness in here whilst singing Oasis.
You can find a lot of videos and photos from Grass on their social media channels. Pop in for a pint and a match, enjoy!
